FINAL PIECES

These are my final pieces. The first image is the second page of my newspaper, the second image is the front cover of my newspaper, and the third is my poster.

Evaluation: What have you learned from your audience feedback?

Throughout my media coursework i have learned that audience feetback is vital for improving my work and getting new idea's. I have also learnt that using different age groups for opinions has helped by getting different feedback which has improved my work a lot. I think that if i didn't use my audience feedback then the information in my newspaper wouldn't be as expanded.

When thinking of newspaper titles i was not sure which one to use, so i wanted to get feedback from my friends. I think that using audience feedback here is vital as they are going to be the ones reading the newspaper!

For my newspaper i needed some serious hitting stories which would make the front page of any newspaper. I chose to use themes such as car crashes and death to catch the readers attention. I mainly did this as i wanted my newspaper to be serious and hard-hitting.

For my Motorbike story i was unsure which picture to use to go with the story, so audience feedback here helped massively, and helped me make up my mind.

Paul and Laura's comments came in useful as i originally was thinking about choosing the same picture as they ended up prefering, so i knew this was the right picture to use! I also agree that this was the right picture to use.

For my radio advert i did a survey because i was interested to find out which type of advert people preferred. I am glad that i did a survey because it made me change my mind about which advert to use! This shows the importance of audience feedback.
If i chose one of the other two radio adverts i think it would have been too long and dragged on a bit, however with the short and snappy radio advert it sticks in your mind and is easier to remember. Taking in mind what my peers and other audience have said has been one of the most important aspects in doing my coursework, it also shows that i can take the negative comments from people and use them to improve my newspaper.

Evaluation: How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?

For my newspaper i needed my newspaper and poster to be similar, so for my newspaper and my poster i used the same title to show that they were all linked.

I really like this font as it is edgy and people could easily recognise it as my newspaper!
I had to make my newspaper relevant to the Isle of Wight so i chose to take a picture of the beach for my poster! The beaches on the Isle of Wight are very popular and are the biggest tourist attraction to the island.

I'm pleased with how my poster turned out as it is simple but effective also.
I have used the website for my poster and newspaper also, as i think this is important. I am using the same tag line in my Newspaper and poster which is "Islands first for news, entertainment and sport!"

The green fields on the Isle of Wight and the countryside are also attractive features of the Island, so with this in mind i took a picture of a field with some horses in as i thought it was a sweet picture and i thought all age groups would like it.

Evaluation: In what way does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

For people to recognise my work as a newspaper i decided to use the conventions of a real newspaper, these were the masthead 'Island Times', date, website, price, stories and pictures.

I followed the layout of existing newspapers as a guide to make my newspaper look better. I looked at the Islands current most popular newspaper 'Isle of Wight County Press' for guidance.

This is the newspaper that i followed, i found it really helpful with making my newspaper.

My newspaper was aimed at 15+ so my adverts were for all age groups, for example i had an advert for restaurant offers (mainly aimed at adults) and also an advert for driving lessons(mainly aimed at teenagers).

These are my adverts, i am really pleased with these as these look like existing newspaper adverts!

Bus Fares Rise

There will be a rise of 20% on bus fares which has caused a massive uproar with its customers as Hamilton (the islands bus company) is known for its high prices, but there is no other public transport available).
The manager of Hamilton said "From July 20th we will raise the bus fares by 25% due to the recession and the rise in the cost of petrol. We have no other choice, if we do not rise the cost then we will be losing out on a lot of money. Yes i agree it is a shame that this has happened but because of this massive recession it is the decision we have chosen to make. The increase usually happens in February, but we do not have enough money to cover this massive cost."
This 20% rise will definitely happen on July 20th and it is thought that a lot less people will not be getting public transport anymore, which means that Hamilton will will still lose out on money.

Dining Advert

This is an advert for dining out which will be in my newspaper. The Lakeside is a posh hotel which people may find too expensive to eat at, so my advertisement will let eveybody see the offer and attract people to the hotel. Putting adverts in a newspaper is an easy way of attracting people and making them aware.

Newspaper Advert- Driving lessons

This is one of my newspaper adverts about driving lessons. I really like the picture i took of my friend jumping in the air after passing her driving test, she looks so happy and it looks good for the driving company as the students are passing, due to their 98% pass rate. I used bright yellow for their pass rate so that is stood out very well and caught peoples eye, as this is what they will be looking for. For the name of the company ans the tag line 'Trust Elite!' 'You'll jump off your feet!' i made it dark and bold so and slanted it slightly to make it look a bit different. I think that this is a good advert for my newspaper.

POSTER!

This is my poster for my island newspaper. i am really pleased with the way that it turned out, i love how bold and striking the font is as it catches your eye. I believe that this poster would interest all age groups and make them want to pick up my newspaper because of the poster.
The whole point of the poster is to advertise my newspaper and interest people to read it, and judging by the way that my poster turned out i think it will achieve that successfully!
Here are some comments about my newspaper-
"I love the font. It really stands out against the blue sky!"
"This is a really simple and relaxing picture, it works really well with the edgy font!"

Small story for front of newspaper

Niton primary school thrown a lifeline

NITON primary school faces being shut down by the Council and have asked other schools for help give them more time because of the huge school re-organisation.
The primary school were given a couple of months to transfer students to another school before taking it over.
Mary Baker, Headteacher at Niton Primary said "Myself and the other teachers and parents were absolutely outraged and heartbroken when the Council said they were shutting down the primary school. It has been here longer than some of us have been alive! After much persuading, they said they would let us keep it open, but this took a lot of effort and if they had said no then i don't know what we would have all done."

Another story for the front of my newspaper

HOPE FOR BABY MICHAEL

Ecstatic parents after being told their babys cancer was removed successfully.

18 month old Michael was diagnosed with cancer and under went a life threatening opertation to remove it, after doctors advising the parents of Michael to not go through with it.
Julie, 30, and David, 32 of Dove Close Sandown, were told early wednesday morning on the 15th October that their son had cancer in his lungs. The doctors told his parents that the chances of baby Michael surviving was only 35%, however the parents were adamant that he would survive, and they insisted that Michael must have the operation.
Michael came out of his operation yesterday with flying colours and has a lot of people praying for him.
Michael's mother Julie said "It just didn't feel right to turn down the operation, it was the only option we had and the only chance of Michael survivng. I am so glad David and myself made that decision, we are now just hoping that he recovers well and is back to normal as soon as possible".

ANOTHER STORY:

I decided to do a happier story as most of mine are sad and depressing stories!

76 YEAR OLD PENSIONER Mary Jones, resident at millbourne close, won £15 million in the National Lottery yesterday (Saturday). Mary was struggling to live off her £30 a week pension before she won the lottery. When interviewed she was asked "will it change your life?" she replied "I should blimming hope so!" She also told Island Times that she needs a new home as her's is currently deteriorating and close to falling down, and also added that she will put the rest towards her only grandaughters education.
This is the biggest amount of money anybody on the Island has won in the lottery, Mary is booked up for lots of interviews as a lot of people are interested to hear her story. All of her family and friends are so pleased for her and say how much she deserves it. Her daughter Kate said "My mother is the kindest, most generous woman i know, she is always there for us and makes us feel happy when were down. My mother is so honest and giving and i couldnt think of anyone better deserved to win the lottery than her! Mary's grandaughter Sophie, 5, said "Well done Nanny i love you lots!"

Feedback from poster ideas

I really like the authenticity of the black and white photograph, it looks very classy and spohisticated, however i don't want to use this photo because the majority of my newspaper will be black and white, so i will use a colour photograph.

I really wanted to use a photograph of a beach for my poster, but one of the photo's is just a beach and it looks a bit too plain for my poster, but there is another photo which has a sea wall and grass in which i think is a nice photograph.
Once i out on the name of the newspaper and the date etc i think it will look really good.

Im torn between using the picture of the beach or the photo of the two horses in a field! i think the horses are really sweet and make a nice poster, but the island i live on is known for its nice beaches so i will use the photo of the beach that i took.

Photo idea's for poster

Poster Ideas

I have come up with a tag line for my Newspaper which i think is catchy and a good one to use 'The island's first for news, entertainment and sport!'

I also need an interesting picture to use for my poster to make it interesting, as i think it would look dull if i didn't have a picture. I will put the newspaper title font on my poster and also add an email address and possibly a date.

Results for my Radio advert ideas

I printed off my three radio advert ideas so that i could get some feedback as i wasn't sure which advert to use. I asked 30 people so i could get a range of results.
I was suprised with the results as 21 people chose the short and snappy advert, whereas only 5 people preferred the conversation about cinema times and only 4 people chose the advert conversation about fashion and entertainment.
I believe that it is very important to do what the readers want as they are the ones that will be reading it. If the advert does not interest them then they will not to pick up the magazine, therefore i shall do the short and snappy radio advert!

Want to know where you can get all of that for just 70p?
Then just pick up an Island Times newspaper!
Free holiday breaks to be won every month in this weekly newspaper, so get down to your local newsagents and get involved!

Radio Adverts!

I have come up with a few idea's for my radio advert but they are quite long so i thought i would come up with a short and snappy advert to compare it to the others and see which i prefer. I will post this new radio advert on my blog.

Script idea for another Newspaper radio advert

-Do you want to go to the cinema tonight Kelly? That film we really want to see has just come out at the cinema.

*Yeah I'd love to, but my internet isn't working so i can't see what time it's on!

-That's ok, just look in your Island Times newspaper, it has the times of the films showings in there, it's so helpful!

*Brilliant idea! I never thought about that!

-I'll have a look. Ummm... Page 20...Cinema's...Films...Ah here it is! Lovestory- 7.30pm. Wow that was easy!

*Well it starts in half an hour, we should get going Sammy!

Script idea for Newspaper radio advert

-What are you reading there hannah?

*Island times! It's the islands new newspaper, with all the latest news. It's really interesting, so much better than those other boring island papers!

-What's so interesting about it?

*It has a section on fashion and entertainment, i read it every week! Plus its only 70p, so much cheaper than those expensive magazines!

-Wow hannah, i can't believe i never knew about Island Times! where can i get a copy?

*They sell it in newsagents everywhere on the Island, and in supermarkets!

-Oh great! Well, for only 70p it would be rude not to!

Radio Adverts

As part of my media coursework I need to draft some radio adverts. I will write out some scripts and then post them on my blog. I think that it is very important to make the advert interesting and make people want to buy my newspaper! It can't be boring otherwise no one will want to buy it.

Photographs for Motorbike crash.

These are the photographs for my Newspaper story about a motorbike crash. I think i will use the last photograph as it shows 3 pupils getting involved with the memory book for the boy that died, Marcus. In my story it says how the students and teachers will all be involved in the making of the book so i think it is important to show students in the picture. I believe that this will be a good photograph for the front of my newspaper, i also asked 10 of my friends which photo they prefer out of these three and they chose the last one aswell, so i will use this one.

I wanted to get feedback from my friends so i asked my friends which photograph they prefer.

Photo with three students- My friend Paul said 'I really like this idea. It shows that the students care and that they all want to be involved in doing something for the student that was killed. I think you should use this picture'

Laura said- 'I agree with Paul! I think it was a good idea using more than one student otherwise it wouldn't have had quite the same effect!'

Matt- 'I believe that the photograph with one student in works best as it is more one-to-one and has a more personal feel about it.'

Photographs for Motorcyclists crash.

My Pictures

Below are pictures for my newspaper story about a boy that died in a car crash. It shows the 'Memory box' that students made to put memories in about the student that died so they could give it to his parents. I have captured people putting in the memories as well as just showing the box. I think that any of these pictures would be good for the front of my newspaper as it shows the students caring about Mark and what they are doing for his parents. I would probably use the picture that shows two students placing memories into the bucket because it shows that the students care.

Newspaper Titles

i really like the first (A) and the last (B) of the titles as they are really bold and interesting. However i am not sure which title to use so i printed these two off and asked 15 people.
I asked the question "For my media coursework newspaper title which font should i use? Font A or font B?"
70% of people said font B and only 30% of people said font A. I think i will use Font B as people prefered it and seeing as my newspaper is for the benefit of other people, so i will go with their choice.

Ideas for fonts for my Newspaper Masthead

I am going to design a range of fonts for the masthead of my newspaper. I would like a bold, interesting font that stands out and becomes a part of my newspaper as much as the stories on the page. I would like people to see the title and immediately recognise the magazine. I will post several ideas on my blog and will use the final tital on my poster advertising my newspaper. I think that the title is a very important part of identifying a newspaper and making it unique, so i will try my hardest to produce a title that stands out and makes people want to pick up my newspaper.
I have posted a selection of newspaper adverts on my blog to get some ideas. For my radio advert i was thinking about either one person talking, or a conversation between two people about the newspaper.

Pictures for my car crash stories...

Draft themes for car crash.

18 YEAR OLD BOY DIES IN SPEEDING COLLISION ON GEORGE STREET

TWO cars were involved in a collision on George street in Ryde early yesterday morning (Wednesday) at about 4am. A blue BMW and a red Renault Megane were involved. There was severe damage to both the cars, especially the Renault which was smashed in the side by the BMW that was speeding well over the 30mph speed limit.
Paul,34, owner of the BMW had major injuries and Mark,18, owner of the Renault, died in the accident. It has been understood that he died instantly and was not in pain. Paul is now in St Mary's hospital suffering from major petrol burns and a fractured spine.
Mark's parents have told the press how much of a wonderful person Mark was and that it has not sunk in that they have lost their only child, words cannot describe the pain that they are going through.
Many people have paid their respects by laying flowers on the side of the road where it happened, his parents have told Island Times how much they appreciate everyones respect.
Head Teacher of Leighmore High School, Susan Hunter, told Island Times that Mark was a 'committed and loveable student with many friends and always willing to help out around the school. "Mark was always so helpful and kind to all of the fellow students. He had a heart of gold and was known for cheering his friends up when they were feeling down. He was a very intelligent student and it is a massive loss to the school because schools need people like him to keep it a friendly place. Mark will be incredibly missed here at Leighmore High School and we will make sure that we do something to remember him by."
Students at Leighmore have made a 'memories' box where all of the students have posted letters of their memories about Mark. This box will then be given to his parents so that they can see how loved Mark was by others around them. The school has also made a memorial garden with Tulips which are Mark's favourite flowers. The students will all help water the plants and take care of them so pay respect to Mark. The students are hoping that this will make it a little bit easier for the parents to deal with losing their only son. Marks parents will announce his funeral date to his family and his school tomorrow morning.

ANOTHER STORY- MAN DIED IN HOSPITAL AFTER DRINK DRIVING.

Lyle Roberts,34 died in a Blue BMW that hit a telegraph pole in George Road, Somerset at 2am yesterday (Monday).
He was found with serious petrol burns and a broken neck, but after further treatment in hospital it was found that he had major bleeding of the brain and died soon after. Police are appealing for anyone who saw the crash to contact them for further investigation. It is now understood that Lyle Roberts was driving 40mh in the 20mph zone and had been drinking heavily before getting into his car. It is thought that if it had been in the day time then Lyle would have killed people walking in the street, but because it was so early there wasnt many people about.
Lyles wife Jane said that Lyle and herself had had a row a few hours before and blames herself for this happening. She agreed to talk to Island Times "I am so shocked. Lyle has never drink driven before, he is such a sensible man and would never have done something so stupid. I feel as though i am to blame because we had an argument before hand, that is the only reason i can think why he would have done this."
There have been flowers laid at the scene by family and friends to show there respect, Lyles friend Paul said "He must have been terribly upset to have gone and done such a stupid thing. We are all incredibly distraught and miss him very much and we are supporting Jane through this tragic time to try and help her cope better.

Draft Stories- motorcyclists crash

MOTORCYCLISTS CRASH LEAVES STUDENT DEAD AND ANOTHER PARALYSED.

FOUR motorbikes have been involved in a collision at Beeper Shoot in the early hours of Monday morning. Police spokesman said the road was very icy and the young motorcyclists were racing alot faster than the speed limit (50mph). One young man has been reported to have died and the other three are in hospital seriously injured, one with head injuries and another paralysed.
Marcus Hughes, 17, died instantly at around 8am on Monday morning after skidding on the road on his motorbike and crashing into his best friend Kyle Potter, who is now paralysed from the legs down. The road was completely blocked because of Ambulances and Police cars from the incident which happened at 2.25am.
The mother of 17 year old Marcus Hughes who passed away during the accident spoke out about the accident and told Police she had grounded her son the day before and was banned from using his motorbike, but she was unaware that he had left the house and, taken his motorbike, too. She says she is angry at herself for not taking his keys off him beforehand. She has lots of support from her friends and family to help her see through this traumatic experience.
Rumours have been heard about speed cameras being fitted in beeper shoot to cut down on speeding and accidents. It is thought that this will make a massive difference because people will not want to pay fines and hopefully they will see that the risk really isnt worth it.
Head Teacher of Carisbrooke High School Peter Smith said how much of a loss to the School this is as Marcus was a brilliant Grade A student and was very popular. "He brought happiness and laughter to the school and all of us at Carisbrooke High School are going to organise a book of pictures and memories which will be photocopied and everybody will get a copy to remember Marcus by".

Another Idea For The Layout Of My Newspaper

This is another idea of a draft of the layout. I like the layout of this as it looks neat and organised. I would be happy using either templates as they both look good.

I prefer the title on the other layout because it is bigger and would stand out more, however i think this layout is neater.

Rough Layouts For My Newspaper

This is a rough draft of my newspaper layout. It is quite typical of the standard newspaper layout, but i like the style of it so im going to keep it. I will make a few more drafts to compare to this layout but i am quite happy with this one! :)
I will have the title/name of the newspaper at the top, adverts and pictures of the adverts down the side, colourful and bold to attract peoples attention, my main story in the centre with a large title of the story and to the other side i will have a sort of contents part with a few of the other stories that are inside, and also the date, issue number, price and bar code.

Themes For Stories in My Newspaper-

I want to include serious, gritty stories in my newspaper, as i think these make the newspaper interesting and make someone want to pick a newspaper up.
Ideas i have come up with are:
1. House Fire
2. Car Accident/Crash
3. 'Lucky To Be Alive' stories
3. Stabbings
4. Robbery/Theft
5. Cancer/Illness
6. Rescues

The Isle of Wight County Press- Cover.

This is the cover of the Isle of Wight County Press from 2004. I was interested to see how much it has changed from the recent county press. It is very similar, but the price and date have moved on the 2010 County Press and 'contents inside' which is the strip along the top of the page is still te same. The front cover is very bold and it grabs your attention because of the colour and the large fonts.
It has the Date in the centre and the price in the top right hand corner. It also has adverts spread about the page advertising events and shops on the Island, also special offers.
The main story is about a death which is very bold and quite hard hitting which will attract someone to read the serious issue. There is a picture to the right of it which shows a road with flowers and cars going past.
To the left is a picture of three women sailing, with the story saying that they had won the Olympics.
I think that the County Press covers are interesting because of the colours and pictures, also the stories arent rediculously long so you dont get bored.
